Way late but here it is...

I have been hanging onto this for some time now and just never got around to posting it. So this is actually from several weeks ago. I will be playing around with the round up format in weeks to come and also at the bottom of this post is a bunch of things I have watched and read in the weeks since this post was written.

Comics

Ignition City #2
Salem's Daughter #0

Not a big list but some really good stuff here. The pick of the week is Ignition City #2. This series just keeps getting better. We find out more about Ignition City (The last place on Earth where one can be launched into space) and the oddball bunch of characters that inhabit it. The plot also thickens as we learn more about the death of Arthur "Rock" Raven. I really like where this story is going!

Books

Scientific Progress Goes 'Boink'
Eldest

While both of these books are really great. The pick of the week goes to Eldest. This series is really fantastic. Any fan of Fantasy Fiction should definitely look into it. Christopher Paolini has done such a great job. I must admit that before I read Eragon I had my doubts about whether I would like this series at all. I have been mighty surprised and pleased with just how awesome it is. If you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings then this is definitely right up your alley and you should check it out.

Movies

Damien: Omen II (1978) 4
The Shaggy Dog (2006) 6
Monster's Vs. Aliens (2009) 7

Not to many really to choose from this week. So the obvious winner is Monster's Vs. Aliens. I was not going in expecting anything amazing so what I got I did like quite a bit. The story was a little bit different than other things out there these days. There were plenty of laughs through out. The voice casting was done very well. Seth Rogen even redeems himself from the disappointing Observe and Report. I am really liking the RealD effect as well. I cannot wait to see Up when it is released in RealD in a few weeks. Overall a good film that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age.

Concerts

Hotel Lights, Guster, and Ben Folds at the Carrier Dome
Separate Ways, The Ataris, Eve 6 at Neahwa Park

I also went to a couple of shows this weekend both of which were great. If I was forced to pick one over the other I would have to say that the Ben Folds show was the better of the two. This was the first time I have seen either him or Guster and I was very impressed. I new very few of Guster's songs but I will definitely look into them more. They did a great job. I have Been a Ben Fold's fan for quite a while now and I was very excited to finally get to see him live. If you ever get the chance definitely take it. He puts on a fantastic show with a great stage show and plenty of audience participation.

Rent (2005) 1
Julius Ceasar (1953) 1
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) 8
Flicka (2006) 1
Murder by Numbers (2002) 7
Civic Duty (2006) 7
Summer of Sam (1999) 6
Harold (2008) 6
The Soloist (2009) 7
Eragon (2006) 2
Righteous Kill (2008) 1
Clear and Present Danger (1994) 4
An American Carol (2008) 1
Charade (1963) 2

Demon Cleaner #1 8
Demon Cleaner #2 8
Crozonia #1 7
Locke & Key: Head Games #5 9

The Great Unknown #2 9
Cars: The Rookie #2 8

In this week's round up...

Not a bad week overall here is this weeks's list

Comics

Hexed #4
The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft #1
Overlook #1
Lillim #2
Mysterius The Unfathomable #4
Soul Kiss #3
Johnny Monster #3

Overall it was a great week for comics. The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft and Lillim were iffy but pulled it together in the end. We shall see how they continue. Soul Kiss just keeps getting better and Johnny Monster # 3 ends the series with probably the best issue of the run. But the stand out is Overlook #1. This series is starting off great. With very interesting characters, a compelling story line, and some really good black and white art make this issue a home run. It has a kind of a gritty dirty feel to it and I look forward to see where it is taken.

Movies

Observe and Report (2009) 6
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005) 7
Where in The World is Osama Bin Laden (2008) 6
K-PAX (2001) 7
Shiver (2008) 1
Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) 6
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) 10
Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) 6
Ira and Abby (2006) 7
Bloodrayne II: Deliverance (2007) 1

Some good stuff here this week. But there is one obvious stand out. I do not give out a rating of a 10 lightly or often. Only when I feel a movie is truly something unique and compelling. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father is one of those movies. It follows a film maker who was friends with Andrew Bagby who was brutally murdered "allegedly" by his fiance Shirley Turner as he travels across the country meeting with Andrew's friends and family making a documentary for Zachary Bagby (Andrew and Shirley's son) who would never get to meet his father. It also follows the legal procedures of Shirley being prosecuted and Andrew's parents trying to get custody of there grandson. If you are unfamiliar with this case as I was I recommend seeing this film before looking into it. It is truly shocking how the events transpire and to see how Andrew's parents dealt with the situation. It really is quite amazing how much these people went through and how they continued on despite their horrific situation. It is a film that should definitely be seen by all.

Books

Essential Daredevil Vol. 1

I also finished reading This collection of early Daredevil comicbooks. It was great to see the early years of the Daredevil story line as they introduced the "Man with No Fear"

Whoops again

A day late again...whoops

Comics

Ignition City #1
30 Days of Night: 30 Days Til' Death #1-3
Locke & Key: Head Games #4

This week had some really good comics and it is hard to pick the best of the bunch. All of them are definitely worth picking up but the one that I liked the best though was Ignition City #1. This series has some great potential. The story is intriguing and entertaining. It follows the happenings of an island filled with old space heroes and adventures who have burnt themselves out over the years. One part Sci-Fi, one part wild west. The art has been done very well. The characters are different from those found in other stories and really set this apart from the pack. definitely check it out.

Movies

Payback (1990) 1
House of Wax (1953) 6

Kind of a slow week on the movie end the pick of the week is House of Wax. If you did not like the remake of this film but never saw the original. Then you should check it out. It is quite different from the remake and in many ways better. The remake was more of a slasher with this version being more of a thriller. Vincent Price does a terrific job with his role. While there are no really scary or scream inducing moments it is still a classic horror film that should be enjoyed by all.

Tuesday, April 07, 2009

A day late...

Not a bad week overall some good comics and some decent movies here is the rundown:

Comics
Jersey Gods #3
The Remnant #4
The Mighty #3
Dead Romeo #1
Cars: The Rookie #1
Irredeemable #1

All were good except for Dead Romeo which I will not be continuing with. Also I did not care much for how they ended The Remnant series. The pick of the week is The Mighty #3. I am liking where this story is going. The characters are very interesting and the story is good. The series may have started off like your average superhero type tale but it really has made some twists and turns that make it stand out in the crowd. Definitely worth checking out if you have not done so already.

DVD Sets
Ultimate 150 Cartoon Festival

I finished another DVD set of some classic cartoons. If you are a fan of the older style animation it is a must check out. It will take you back to a time before cartoon violence and such was censored like it is today.

Movies
I Love You, Man (2009) 8
Fast and Furious (2009) 7
Just Friends (2005) 6
Waking Life (2001) 1

The pick of the week is I Love You, Man. I was kind of unsure whether this would be good or not. I had heard good things and the trailers looked interesting but whether or not it would be a stand out comedy was doubtful. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It had many laugh out loud moments and was a little different from other comedies that you see these days. Paul Rudd and and Jason Segel both did terrific jobs with their roles. If you are unsure at all on whether you will like this I recommend giving it a shot.

There you go folks another week round up!

Monday, March 30, 2009

And the Winner is...

This week was a little more normal for me in terms of content here is this week's round up:

Here are the comics that I picked up this week:

Crossed #0
Gears of War #5
Dragon Prince #3

All of which were good. I am really interested in checking out the rest of the Crossed series to see where they take it. It is a pretty interesting concept. The pick of the week however is Gears of War #5. Any fan of the game who is not already reading this series should really check it out. It is a prequel to the events of Gears of War 2 and they are doing it really well. Even if you are not into the video game but like a good action comic you should check out this series.

I also finished the following books this week:

Castle Waiting
Too Cool to Be Forgotten

Both were very good and I highly recommend checking out both of them but my pick is Castle Waiting. If you are a fan of Jeff Smith's Bone you will probably enjoy this. It has a similar quirky fantasy feel. Linda Medley has done a fantastic job with this series. Her takes on some classic fairytale themes are really refreshing and quite amusing.

The movies that I watched this week were:

Max Payne (2008) 7
Fiddler on The Roof (1971) 1
First Descent (2005) 6

The pick of the week here is Max Payne. I was kind of nervous with this one. I loved the game and let's face it the movie industry has not always done the best things when it comes to making a movie based on a game. I must admit it was not the greatest thing ever but they really did alright by it. I thought that the way it was shot was really great and Mark Wahlberg did a really good job with the role. If you are into action you should at least give this one a shot!

Monday, March 23, 2009

Short and Sweet Round Up

OK so this week was pretty slow. I read a bunch of comics but did not see a single movie. I did finish a collection of old cartoons called 150 Cartoon Classics. Which was pretty good if you are entire old style cartoons from the 1930's through 1950's, Stuff like The Three Stooges, Felix The Cat, Casper...

Here is a look at the comics that I picked up this week:

Lillim #1
The Night Projectionist #1
Push #4-6
Dragon Prince #2
Bad Dog #2

Everything was pretty decent nothing bad really here. The pick of the week is Push. I really enjoyed this series. I have not yet seen the movie but I am hoping that it does not let me down. It was drawn great and the story kept me interested and wanting more. Definitely check it out if you are into sci-fi type stuff.

Monday, March 16, 2009

Nothing truly mind blowing this week but a couple of things that were pretty good

House of The Dead (2003) 1
Single White Female 2: The Psycho (2005) 5
Dial M For Murder (1954) 1
The Ant Bully (2006) 7
Penelope (2006) 7
Rory O'Shea Was Here (2004) 7
Maniac Cop (1988) 6

The pick of the week was a lot tougher this week than it usually is because there was nothing that was amazing. But the best one was probably The Ant Bully. The voice acting, animation, and story were all pretty good. I have seen better but for a kids movie this was pretty good. It kept me interested and entertained all the way through. If you are looking for a good animated movie then give this a shot.

As for comics this week I picked up the following:

Push #2
Push #3
The Life and Times of Savior 28 #1
Hexed #3
Super Zombies #1
Soul Kiss #2

All were good except for Super Zombies which I probably will not be continuing with. The pick of the week though is Push. Although they did not come out this week. This series really has me interested and stoked about the upcoming film. The story is terrific with twists and turns that make you yearning to read the next issue to find out what happens next. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series and checking out the movie when it comes out.

That's all for this week, check back next Monday!

Monday, March 09, 2009

Nights in Rodanthe, Goodfellas, Watchmen...

Just your average week with a couple good and a couple bad here is this week's round up:

Watchmen (2009) 8
Ugly Dachshund (1966) 6
Nights in Rodanthe (2008) 1
Dan in Real Life (2007) 1
Goodfellas (1990) 7

The pick of the week is Watchmen. First off if you have not read the novel yet what are you waiting for. I was kind of worried about this because I enjoyed the Graphic Novel quite a bit. It is always a little bit scary going to see a movie based on a book that you liked a lot. Overall I really I think they did a fantastic job. It was pretty true to the book through the majority of the movie. There was one big change with the ending that I did not agree with at all and for a movie that was staying so true to the source for for almost the entire thing it did not really make since to me why they changed it. Despite this everything else about it was pretty awesome. The action, the story, the special effects. It all just works. It may not be for everyone but everyone should at least give it a try.

On the comic book front here is what I picked up this week:

Bang! Tango #2
Executive Assistant Iris #0
Fringe #3
I am Legion #2
Jersey Gods #2
Locke & Key: Head Games #3
The Mighty #2
Push #1
WhatMen?!

All in all pretty good. I am having a little trouble following I am Legion. There seems to be a bunch of characters who all look very similar to me. But other than that the story is pretty good. The pick of the week is definitely Lock & Key: Head Games #3. With the cliff hanger ending of the last issue I had no idea what was coming next and what it could possibly mean ending with Boyd's head completely open like it was. The artwork on pages 6-7 alone is worth picking this up. Joe Hil and Gabriel Rodriguez have done it again!

I also read

Calvin & Hobbes: Revenge of The Baby-Sat
30 Days of Night: Red Snow

Both were good although there have been previous installments of the 30 Days of Night series that I have liked better.

That is all for this week folks!

Monday, March 02, 2009

Slow Week

Kind of a slow week on nthe movie front only seeing one film but I did get a decent amount of reading done:

The Wrestler (2008) 9

The pick of the week and only film that I saw was The Wrestler of which I was a little worried about liking. With so much hype around it could it really be that good. Believe it or not it does definitely live up to the hype and is a fantastic movie. Mickey Rourke does an amazing job playing a broken down wrestler who is having trouble moving on with his life when he has known nothing but being a wrestler for the majority of his life. It is probably not for everyone but I think the majority of people will like this movie. So it is definitely worth giving a shot.

In other media I Picked up the following comics this week:

The Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 #5
Dragon Prince #1

Both were good. I am curious to see where they take Dragon Prince next. Mouse Guard was great as always. David Petersen really does a fantastic job with this series.

I also read the following books:

The Complete Peanuts: 1957-1958
300
Salt Water Taffy: A Climb Up Mt. Barnabus
30 Days of Night: Eben & Stella
I am Legend
Eragon

All of which was pretty good. I must admit that I was kind of disappointed with this volume of 30 Days of Night. The story was good but I found the art to be kind of confusing at times. It was often hard to distinguish the different characters. I was pretty nervous with reading 300. I did not care much for the movie really so I was not sure whether this was going to be worth it. It totally blows the movie away. The art and story are both amazing. My pick of the week is I Am Legend. Steve Niles completely out did himself with this. The story is told so perfectly that at times I could hardly put it down. He makes you really feel for Robert Neville and how lonely he must be being the last person on Earth. It is a must read.

That is all for this week folks. Comments are always welcome let me know your thoughts!

Monday, February 23, 2009

John Valby and more

An average week overall. Here is the rundown:

Mamma Mia! (2008) 7
Taken (2008) 8
Tarzan (1999) 7
The Secret Life of Words (2005) 1
The Color Purple (1985) 7
Presumed Innocent (1990) 6
Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil (1997) 1
Kiss of Death (1995) 5
Half Nelson (2006) 1
Swingers (1996) 5

The pick of the week is Taken. I had heard mixed reviews about this film so I was unsure whether I would like it or not. But after seeing it I must say I was quite impressed. I thought that everything about it was great. It had plenty of action for any action fan and the story kept you intrigued as to what would happen next. Liam Neeson did a terrific job playing the revenge seeking dad trying to find his kidnapped daughter. Like I said I had heard mixed reviews on this so for you it could probably go either way but I think it is definitely worth checking out.

As for comics this past week. I picked up Johnny Monster #1, The Great Unknown #1, Mysterius The UnFathomable #2, and Zombies That Ate The World #1. All of which were alright. But the stand out was The Great Unknown. The story is starting off pretty good and I am interested in seeing what will happen next.

I also continued my way through the Calvin & Hobbes series and finished Weirdos From Another Planet! which is great just like the others.

On another note this week I got the chance to see John Valby (Dr. Dirty). This show was hilarious. However if you are one who is easily offended then this is probably not the show for you. Honestly he is quite the equal opportunity offender and touches a little bit on just about everything. He knows where the line is and then pushes right on over it. If you are into that kind of humor then this is the show for you!

That is all for this folks!

President's Day Round Up

Extremely slow week for me this week The pick of the week and only film I saw was Hotel for Dogs (2009) 6. It was better than expected. It is a cute family film that any animal lover will probably enjoy. The story is good and entertaining. The acting is believable but not really amazing. So over all it can go either way. Give it a shot and you might surprise yourself.

On the comic front my pick of the week is probably Gears of War #4. The story is quite interesting and if you are fan of the games then you should probably check this out cause you will like it.

I also read 30 Days of Night: Spreading the Disease and Zombie Cop. Both of which turned out to be good. I have to say that Spreading the Disease is one of the best story lines in the 30 Days of Night series thus far. It was quite enjoyable.

That's it for this week. Stay tuned!

Coraline, Reign Over Me, and more

Some decent stuff this week but also some really bad stuff.

March of the Penguins (2005) 6
Coraline (2009) 9
Into the Blue (2005) 6
Dracula's Daughter (1936) 1
Reign Over Me (2007) 9
House on Haunted Hill (1959) 5
Terror Planet (2007) 6
The Brothers Solomon (2007) 1
Bull Durham (1988) 1
Poseiden (2006) 6
Red Rock West (1992) 6

The pick of the week was again a close one but I have to go with Coraline. This was a fantastic movie. The imagery, the story, the voice acting, the music... All of it was top notch and made this a movie that I have to recommend to all. I simply do not see how anyone can not enjoy this movie. After watching the movie I do as I usually do and check out IMDB's trivia section and was surprised to find out it was all done with Stop-Motion instead of all computer animation. It seriously looks that good. If you have the chance I also would recommend seeing it in 3D. It is only the second film that I have had the opportunity to see in RealD and already I am loving this technology. It is so much better than the old school red and blue style 3D. So this movie is definitely a home run, go and check it out!

In other media I finished the The Complete Peanuts: 1955-1956 which again is great, enough said...

Salt Water Taffy: The Legend of Old Salty is a terrific story about two brothers who go on a family vacation and the adventures that they have with "Old Salty" It is kind of kiddie but the story and images are quit enjoyable even for an older person.

Heathentown is a fantastic original graphic novel. Horror based but honestly it is not all that scary. But that is OK, it still can be enjoyed because the story is solid and the art is great. I have found sometimes in the past with black and white stories drawn similar to this one can be hard to distinguish the different characters. If you are hesitant to check this out because of that do not worry this is not the case.

As for new comics that came out this week my pick of the week has to be Locke & Key: Head Games #2. Joe Hill and the gang do it again and give us another terrific chapter of the Locke & Key storyline. If you are not reading this yet then what are you waiting for. Check out the the first story in Welcome to LoveCraft and then move on to Head Games you will not regret it and trust me you do not want to miss out.

That's all for this week. Check back next Monday for more.
